Common RF connector type Jul 23, 2023
RF connector is a connector for electrical connection for signal transmission in radio frequency applications. These connectors are used in a variety of applications from 0 to 18 GHz . All types of RF connectors have a male connector and a female connector. Male connectors are commonly referred to as plugs and female connectors are referred to as jacks. The center pin and the external grounding with locking mechanism provide a secure and reliable connection.

How do you choose RF connector? it depends on the frequency, performance, size and shape of each connector type, such as SMA, N, IPEX, MCX, SMB, SMP, DIN, TNC, MMCX , etc.  For example, SMA connectors and N type connectors.

SMA connector is one of the most suitable RF connectors in UHF and It is the majority of the SHF series. SMA connectors is bestchoice for RF engineers.

In terms of impedance matching,  SMA connector is one of the best performing connectors. The most common type is a 3.5mm connector.

Applications: GSM, CDMA, radio communication boards, RF power amplifiers, RF isolators, power splitters, directional couplers, Wi-Fi antennas and low power UHF communication systems.

Type N is a medium RF connector for durable applications. It provides stability up to 11 GHz. The N-type has a threaded locking mechanism that provides a secure connection.

Waterproof n-type connectors are available for specific applications. Due to its durability and performance, most of RF test equipment uses  N-type as its default connector solution. It is a good choice for well matched impedance applications.

Applications: RF equipment, base stations and low- and high-power UHF communication systems, satellite systems and radar systems.
